Filter

Removes highs, lows, or everything but a band around the cutoff

Open in the synth with a demo patch Open Modular

What it does

A filter cuts away part of the spectrum: low-pass keeps everything below the cutoff and makes the sound darker and softer, high-pass keeps everything above it and leaves only a whisper, and band-pass keeps a narrow slice around it. Cutoff is the frequency where that boundary sits; Q (resonance) emphasises the frequencies right next to it and starts to sing at high values. The Cutoff input lets something else move that boundary, an LFO for instance.
