About this earthquake
A rupture about 500 km long in the same subduction zone as Valdivia 1960. Strong shaking was felt across an area home to 80% of Chile's population, and the tsunami destroyed coastal villages. The quake was powerful enough to slightly shift Earth's axis and shorten the day.
