The most powerful earthquake ever recorded instrumentally. The rupture stretched nearly 1,000 km along the Chilean subduction zone. A tsunami up to 25 m high devastated the Chilean coast and crossed the entire Pacific, killing people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.
