About the earthquake tracker
Data comes from the public USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) feed and refreshes automatically; pre-1904 historical events come from the GEM Global Historical Earthquake Catalogue (CC BY-SA). Sensitivity zones are approximate radii within which shaking is typically felt as strong, moderate and weak; they are derived from magnitude and hypocentre depth. "I felt it" reports are anonymous and help show where the shaking was actually perceived by people.

What it is and why
The tracker merges earthquake data from two sources: USGS (the United States Geological Survey) is polled every minute, and EMSC (the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre) often publishes regional events a few minutes earlier. Duplicates between the sources are reconciled automatically. Historical events back to 1904 come from the GEM catalogue.
Every event has its own page with a map, depth, magnitude, nearest towns and an estimate of the area where the shaking could be felt. If you felt an earthquake, mark it — those reports help refine the felt-area map.
How to use it
- Open the map: fresh events are drawn larger and brighter; the magnitude and period filters sit above the map.
- Type a city or region into the search to see earthquakes near that place over the chosen period.
- Click an event to open its card with details, the felt area and a link to the source.
- The “I felt it” button lets you rate the intensity on a simple scale and see what others reported.

Frequently asked questions
Why did the magnitude change an hour later?
The first estimate uses a few stations and is refined as more data arrives. The tracker picks up the revised USGS values automatically.
How far away can an earthquake be felt?
It depends on magnitude and depth: a shallow magnitude 4 is felt within tens of kilometres, a magnitude 6 within hundreds. The event card shows the computed area.
How quickly do new events appear?
Usually within 1–5 minutes: USGS and EMSC are polled every minute, and regional networks sometimes publish even faster.
