About this earthquake
The strongest earthquake in Russian history. The resulting tsunami, up to 18 m high, almost completely destroyed the town of Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island. The tragedy was long suppressed in the USSR; it prompted the creation of the country's tsunami warning service.
