About this earthquake
One of the strongest intracontinental earthquakes in history struck the Chilik river valley east of Verny (now Almaty). The shaking was felt across a vast area — from Western Siberia to Kashgar. Verny, still rebuilding after the 1887 disaster, was badly damaged again.
