About this earthquake
The strongest earthquake in Japanese history. A tsunami up to 40 m high travelled as far as 10 km inland, washing away entire towns and causing the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident — the worst since Chernobyl. Honshu, Japan's main island, shifted 2.4 m to the east.
