An undersea earthquake off Sumatra triggered the deadliest tsunami in human history. Waves up to 30 m high struck the coasts of 14 countries — from Indonesia and Thailand to Sri Lanka and Somalia. The catastrophe led to the creation of the Indian Ocean tsunami warning system.
