The catastrophe that destroyed Tokyo and Yokohama on 1 September 1923. The shock struck at lunchtime while cooking fires burned — firestorms in the wooden cityscape claimed more lives than the shaking itself. In Japan, 1 September is still observed as Disaster Prevention Day.
