About this earthquake
On the morning of 1 November 1755, All Saints' Day, an earthquake, tsunami and subsequent fires almost completely destroyed Lisbon — one of Europe's wealthiest capitals. The catastrophe shook Enlightenment thought and gave birth to scientific seismology.
