From Latin sagittārius (“archer”), calque of Ancient Greek τοξότης (toxótēs); possibly adapted from Akkadian 𒀯𒉺𒉋𒊕 (pabilsaĝ, “the bow-armed god Pabilsaĝ”) (see Pabilsaĝ), from Sumerian 𒀯𒉺𒉋𒊕 (ᴹᵁᴸPA.BIL₂.SAG).
