Cognate with Icelandic geyma, Norwegian gjømme, Swedish gömma, Danish gemme, Faroese geymi, Alemannic German gaume, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐌼𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gaumjan). Doublet of gaum ("to understand, comprehend"), gorm (“to gape, gawk”), and goam (“to recognise, pay attention”), all from Middle English gome, from Old Norse gaum.
