Learned borrowing from Mycenaean Greek 𐀷𐀙𐀏 (wa-na-ka, “king”), informed in part by its Ancient Greek cognate ϝάναξ (wánax, “king”). Doublet of anax, from Ancient Greek ἄναξ (ánax).
