From French Vosges, from Latin Vosegus (in the manuscripts also Vogesus), probably from the name of a Celtic god, from Proto-Celtic *uɸo- (“sub-, under”) and *segos (“force, victory”) (compare Middle Irish seg (“strength”), Welsh hŷ (“bold, brave”), and the place name Segovia).
