Etymology

Borrowed from translingual Umbrina, coined by French zoologist Georges Cuvier in 1817 on page 174 of Volume I of Le règne animal distribué d'après son organisation as a Latinization of French Ombrines (“shadowy ones”) from ombre + -ines, Old French onbre, ombre, from Latin umbra, probably from Old Latin *omra, possibly from a Proto-Indo-European *h₂mr-u-, *h₂mrup-.
