From Middle English tohewen, from Old English tōhēawan (“to hew in pieces, chop up”), from Proto-Germanic *tehawwaną (“to cut to pieces”), equivalent to to- + hew. Cognate with Old Frisian tehawa, Middle Low German tohouwen, Dutch tehouwen, German zerhauen (“to chop up, hack”).
