  1. A former territory of the United States, comprising of most of the land gained from the Louisiana Purchase, excluding Louisiana proper, existing from 1805 to 1812, when it was renamed to the Territory of Missouri after the Territory of Orleans was admitted into the Union as "Louisiana".
