Etymology
Borrowed from Sinhalese ශ්රී ජයවර්ධනපුර කෝට්ටේ (śrī jayawardhanapura kōṭṭē). "Jayawardenepura" (ජයවර්ධනපුර (jayawardhanapura)) was the name of Kotte when it was conquered by Prince Sapumal in the 13th century, meaning "the resplendent city of growing victory", from Sanskrit जय (jaya, “victory”) + Sanskrit वर्धन (vardhana, “growth”) + Sanskrit पुर (pura, “city”).
