Etymology
Borrowed from Samoan pisupo, from English pea soup. Pea soup was the first canned food introduced to Samoa, causing the islanders to refer to all canned foods as pisupo (a borrowing of pea soup adapted to the phonotactics of Samoan). Corned beef subsequently became the most common canned food in Samoa, causing Samoans to exclusively refer to corned beef when using the word pisupo in English.
