  1. The reasonable and necessary costs incurred by a party to a lawsuit, often in accordance with a scale of costs published by the court and excluding any work not necessary to resolve the case.
  2. An award granted by a court requiring one party (normally the unsuccessful party in litigation) to pay another party the amount of party and party costs the latter incurred.
