panel painting
Meanings
noun
- A painting created on a rigid support, most commonly a flat, prepared wooden board, as opposed to flexible canvas or wall surfaces; its stable, smooth base is ideal for detailed work with tempera or oil paints, and was the primary method for easel painting before canvas became widespread in the 16th century; often used to refer to polyptychs (multi-panel paintings; see hyponyms).
