According to 4chan researcher Sal Hagen, the term with the slashes was first used on the 4chan /pol/ board by an anonymous user who posted on August 7, 2015: "TRUMP IS /ourguy/". The term reached its peak popularity on 4chan in early 2017 before rapidly declining.
