From João de Loureiro's (1790) taxonomic name Osmanthus (“genus of flowering shrubs”), from Ancient Greek ὀσμή (osmḗ, “smell”) + ἄνθος (ánthos, “flower”), for the strong scent of the Osmanthus fragrans.
