Etymology

From Italian Orlando (“Roland”), ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *Hrōþiland. The city in Florida has gone by the name since 1857, perhaps in honor of the soldier Orlando Reeves, whom the Seminoles killed there in 1835. Previously, it had been settled in 1844 as Jernigan. Doublet of Roland.
