  1. An early New Indo-Aryan language, ancestor of modern Punjabi, spoken from c. 1000–1600 CE which is found in many hymns of the Guru Granth Sahib which were written by the first five Sikh Gurus, and in the poems of Fariduddin Ganjshakar.
