North Macedonia

Meanings

1. A country on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. Official name: Republic of North Macedonia. Capital and largest city: Skopje. Part of Yugoslavia until 1992. The current name was adopted in 2019 to resolve a naming dispute with Greece.
2. The northern part of the geographical region known as Macedonia.
3. The northern part of the modern Greek province of Macedonia.
4. The northern part of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia.

Etymology

From north + Macedonia. Suggested as a name for the republic since at least the 1990s. Part of the official name of the country since February 2019.
