Borrowed from Late Latin Neustria. An origin from *Ni-oster-rike, meaning "northeastern kingdom" or "not the eastern kingdom" has been proposed; see Proto-West Germanic *austr and *rīkī, also Gothic and Proto-Norse ni. For further origins, compare Austrasia.
