Etymology

From Russian Не́ман (Néman), from Lithuanian Nemunas, of uncertain origin, possibly from an Old Lithuanian word meaning "damp, wet" (Proto-Indo-European *ned- (“wet”), sharing Ancient Greek νοτερός (noterós)), or from nemti (“to become silent”), or from Finnic niemi (“cape”).
