Etymology

From German Nauru, from Nauruan Naoero. The exact origin of the name is uncertain. The German anthropologist Paul Hambruch suggested that it derives from the Nauruan phrase a-nuau-a-ororo (anáoero, “I go to the seashore”), although this was later disputed by the German Catholic missionary Alois Kayser.
