From the now disused taxonomic name Monoprion (“section of genus Graptolithus”), coined by the French geologist and palaeontologist Joachim Barrande in 1850 from Ancient Greek μόνος (mónos, “single”) + πρίων (príōn, “a saw”), + -idian.
