From Ancient Greek μόνιμος (mónimos, “stable, permanent”) + -limnion (from Ancient Greek λῐ́μνη (lĭ́mnē, “lake”) + -ion), first appearing in the writings of British ecologist George Evelyn Hutchinson (1903–1991).
