US, c. 1908; compare earlier lyophilize (1894). lyo- (“solvent, dispersion”) + -philic (“having affinity for”), from Ancient Greek λύω (lúō, “to loosen, to dissolve”) + φίλος (phílos, “beloved”) + Latin -icus.
