Etymology

louden + -er. Originally coined by American screenwriter Alan Spencer and the writing staff of TV sitcom Sledge Hammer!. Patterned after silencer, a device that reduces the noise produced by a gun. Since gaining traction amongst a sector of gun afficianados, who then created various working versions of the TV prop.
