Korčula

Etymology

Borrowed from Serbo-Croatian Kȏrčula, from Italian Curzola, from Latin Corcȳra, from Ancient Greek Κόρκῡρα (Kórkūra), alternative form of Κέρκῡρα (Kérkūra, “Corfu”). The first Greek settlers to Korčula came from Corfu and named it Μέλαινα Κόρκυρα (Mélaina Kórkura, literally “Black Corfu”) after their homeland and in recognition of Korčula’s dark trees.
