Etymology

Perhaps from Munsee kíhtsiipoong (kíhtsi·po·ng), from kíhtsiipuw (kíhtsi·pəw, “big river”) + -ung (-əng, locative suffix), from kíhch- (“big, very”), from Proto-Algonquian *keʔči-, + síipuw (sí·pəw, “river”), from Proto-Algonquian *si·pi·wi. The river was later renamed after the group's chief, Croton.
