From Late Middle English genet, from Old French genet, from Old Catalan genet or Old Spanish ginete (“small fast horse; light horseman”), from Andalusian Arabic زَنَاتِي (zanātī), the Zenati or Zenata Berbers, known as excellent horse breeders. Doublet of Zenati.
