Etymology

Uncertain. Plausibly a eggcorn from, or a humorously intentional alteration of, chill out. Alternatively, perhaps a figurative extension from the gelatin-related sense, as gelatins are allowed to rest while they set up, and their setting up involves stasis and calm.
