Etymology

From Arabic جَمَاهِيرِيَّة (jamāhīriyya, “[state] of the masses”), which derives from جُمْهُورِيَّة (jumhūriyya, “republic”) by changing the first element, جُمْهُور (jumhūr, “public”), to its plural form, جَمَاهِير (jamāhīr, “the masses”).
