Etymology

Of Ancient Ligurian origin. Related to the name Veleiates, though it is unclear if these are the same group referred to differently by ancient historians or two slightly different but related groups. Probably of Celtic origin: Encyclopédie Celtique suggests that the name means "the honest ones," "the best ones," from Proto-Celtic *wellos (“desirable, good”). Mommsen instead prefers an Italic, specifically Umbrian origin, though he does not list any meaning.
