From Middle English huckbone (“hip bone”), a nickname for someone with a deformed hip who probably walked crookedly.Alternatively, a Viking name based on the norse for "high village" ie "hogbyn", which is the earliest recorded spelling of the name. Interestingly, there is a village in Kent called Hogben's Hill".
