Etymology

First attested in 1894. From the German Hidradenitis (1865; also the etymologically more consistent Hidrotadenitis, 1893), ultimately representing the Ancient Greek roots ἱδρώς (hidrṓs, “sweat”, stem: ἱδρῶτ-, hidrōt-) + ἀδήν (adḗn, “gland”, stem: ἀδεν-, aden-) + -ῖτις (-îtis, “[inflammatory] disease”).
