Coined by Chain et al. in 1944, in reference to the mold Aspergillus fumigatus, mut. helvola Yuill. The epithet helvola is a feminine diminutive of Latin helvus (“honey-yellow”). By surface analysis, Latin helvus + -ole + -ic.
