Etymology

Learned borrowing from Hittite 𒆳𒌷𒄩𒅀𒊭 (KURᵁᴿᵁḫa-ya-ša /Ḫayaša/). The name has been compared to the ethnonym of Armenians — հայ (hay). Martirosyan derives it from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éyos (“metal”), thus "land abounding in metal".
