Etymology

The court title derives from Arabic الحَاجِب (al-ḥājib, “chamberlain”). Use of the word to designate a headscarf derives from Arabic حَاجِب (ḥājib, “concealing, covering, eyebrow”), from حَجَبَ (ḥajaba, “to veil, to cover, to screen”) (whence also hijab).
