Etymology

* English surname of Norman origin, from Great Gornhay in Tiverton, Devon, from the Old English personal name Gārmund, see Garman. * Also as a habitational surname of Norman origin, from the village of Germisay, in Lorraine. It could also be a habitational surname from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The second element of both of these is probably Old Norse ey (“island”).
