From French Ganymède, from Latin Ganymēdēs, from Ancient Greek Γανυμήδης (Ganumḗdēs, “meant to please”), from γάνυμαι (gánumai, “to rejoice, to be glad”) + μήδεα (mḗdea, “thought, intention”). Doublet of catamite.
