  1. A band of soft metal near the base of an artillery shell which is forced into engagement with the gun's rifling upon firing, allowing the rifling to spin up the shell and providing a gastight seal around the base of the shell.
  2. A band or strap that communicates motion from one machine, or part of a machine, to another.
