From French Dnieper, from Russian Днепр (Dnepr), from Old East Slavic Дънѣпръ (Dŭněprŭ), from Proto-Slavic *Dъněprъ, from Proto-Sarmatian *Δānāfr (literally “deep river”). Doublet of Dnipro and Danasper. See also Latin Danapris and Ancient Greek Δάναπρις (Dánapris).
