Coined by Hans Jenny from Latin cȳmat(is) (“sprout, swelling, hollow sphere”) + -ics, stem of cȳma, from Ancient Greek κῡ́μᾰτος (kū́mătos, “wave, billow, swell, sprout, fetus”), genitive of κῦμα (kûma).
