Etymology

Doublet of shashlik, ultimately from a Turkic language; based on the onset the closest candidates would be Turkmen çişlik or Kumyk чишлик (çişlik), or Crimean Tatar şışlıq (now şaşlıq). Supposedly introduced by a single individual from Crimea, perhaps dissimilated in English.
